This course’s aim is to encourage students to explore civic engagement for the entirety of their university experience to make a positive lasting impact in Pittsburgh communities and beyond. This course is a collaboration with the Office of PittServes within Student Affairs to ensure students have access to language and research around civic engagement as well as access to a myriad of service opportunities.
Building on the foundation of the conventional Academic Foundations course, students will explore their civic identity through intentional dialogue and mindfulness reflection practices. Through class work and out-of-class activities, students will gain knowledge of the educational opportunities available to them on and off campus, engage in cohort style learning with other first-term students and be introduced to valuable resources that can aid them as a first-year college student.
“A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead
